Newport Harriers has a long history being found in 1896 and still going to this day. Whilst digging through the archives I came across an article from Boxing Day 1936 in which Newport Harriers (presumably the athletic club) were invited to participate in a fox hunt around Ringland and the Coldra.

The event started at the historic Langstone Court and after finding a fox at Flat Wood where the present day Holiday Inn is located wound it's way via Coldra Lodge (near Coldra House) across Chepstow Road and up to Ringland Top before being lost. No fox was found at Flat Wood nor Coldra Wood but at Priory Wood (location of the Celtic Manor golf course) another was found and pursued to New Wood (still on the golf course) but was lost.

The full report is below.

Newport Harriers had an excellent day's sport with a large field when they met by invitation on Boxing Day at Langstone Court, where they were hospitably entertained by Mr Baker.

Hounds went into Flat Wood, where in a very short time a large number of foxes were on foot. Hounds gave some fine covert hunting with rare music. After a considerable time, a fox broke cover near the Coldra Lodge, making his way, hard pressed, for Christchurch and turning left-handed by The Bucklands, he swung down and across the main road away for Ringland Top, where, after a good bustle round, he went to ground and was left.

The route they took — Flat Wood, Coldra, Ringland Top, Flat Wood, Priory Wood, New Wood

Back at Flat Wood, hounds worked hard but found it bare. Next the Coldra Wood was tried, this also failed to hold a fox, but at Priory Wood, a stout fox was soon on the move, and after a good bustle broke cover for New Wood, where in the falling light hounds were called off.
